Witches trade brooms for paddles in Redondo Beach’s newest Halloween tradition

  • A week ago, following a second playoff victory, Palos Verdes coach Patrick Lynch wanted his young girls volleyball team to continue to recognize it belonged in big matches among the top CIF-Southern Section squads in the Division 2 bracket.



  • The Sea Kings received the message well, notching two more victories in the tournament. However, stopping Huntington Beach’s vaunted win streak Saturday proved to be one test too many.

    Third-seeded Huntington Beach posted a 25-22, 25-15, 25-22 sweep over second-seeded Palos Verdes to run its win streak to 21 matches and advance to its first CIF-SS final since 2009. The program is seeking its first CIF-SS title since 1996.

    Lillian Perkins registered 12 kills and Sydney Murrey chipped in seven to lead Huntington Beach (28-5), which will host top-seeded Aliso Niguel, Saturday in the championship match.

    “I’m not as concerned about the streak, I just want one more,” Oilers coach Craig Pazanti said.

    The Sea Kings (25-8) were paced early by Suzy Jellison, who finished with six kills.

    Palos Verdes struggled to get in a rhythm until a hotly contested third set that was tied nine times.

    Knotted at 21, a poor Sea Kings set and combined Oilers block from Taylor Ponchak and Kylie Leopard gave Huntington Beach a two-point edge. After a Palos Verdes timeout, Haylee LaFontaine tacked on a kill to push the advantage to 24-21.

    The Sea Kings survived match point after a Huntington Beach hitting error, but Ponchak sealed the match with a kill on the following point.

    “We never gave up,” Lynch said. “We didn’t feel, at all, that we couldn’t win. They played every point with maximum effort and I’m proud of them.

    “We can build from this experience. It’s such an invaluable experience for them to go through.”

    Jellison had four quick kills to put Palos Verdes out to an early 12-7 lead in set one and stretched the lead to as many as seven.

    The Sea Kings could not sustain it, as issues passing contributed to six hitting errors in the frame and the Oilers stormed back.

    “We got stuck in a few rotations and they capitalized on that,” Lynch said.

    Jellison’s fifth kill pulled Palos Verdes within 23-22, but a poor set on the ensuing point and a Huntington Beach service ace closed the set.

    “We had two really good, young teams out there,” Pazanti said. “I think we weathered the storm (in set one). We talked about how they were going to come out with the energy, the momentum, their crowd. … We went on a seven-point run of our own to get back in the match.”

    The Oilers erased another smaller, albeit brief, deficit at the start of the second set.

    Down 3-1, Ponchak and Leopard combined on a block and the Oilers’ play at the net limited Jellison to a single kill the rest of the match. That sparked a 6-1 run and Huntington Beach never looked back.

    “I don’t consider us a huge team but we’re solid all the way across,” Pazanti said. “We blocked a few just to slow it down so we could run our transition. Our defense has been our key the whole year.
